Here are some of the most frequently asked questions
Q. I've got a job and a family so I can't always be available, so how could I help?
A. We can tailor our needs to your availability, we work flexibly with our volunteers so that the time you are able to give us fits in with your lifestyle. You don't always have to commit yourself to a regular slot every week unless that's what you want to do.
Q. Isn't it very stressful, working with such very sick people?
A. Many volunteering opportunities don't involve direct contact with patients, such as admin, fundraising, gardening or retail work, and all these jobs are just as essential to the Hospice as those voluntary roles working alongside patients.
Q. I'm a student hoping to take up a career in healthcare, would voluntary work help me?
A. The Hospice actively encourages volunteer applications from students, and we can offer roles in patient areas which will give useful experience in palliative care, as well as improving your chances of getting into the college of your choice.
Q. What about the costs, parking, bus fares and the like?
A. No volunteer should ever be out of pocket through carrying out voluntary work, the Hospice repays all direct expenses incurred whilst carrying out voluntary duties.
Q. I don't have any particular talent, how could I be of use?
A. No problem, we provide training for all our roles, you'll never be asked to undertake a task without adequate support.
Q. I'm retired and go on lots of holidays, would that stop me from volunteering?
A. Not at all, some volunteers are away for six months at a time. As long as we know, we can work around your holiday dates so that you volunteer when you are here!
