Lymphoedema Service

Lymphoedema is the term used for swelling of body tissues due to the accumulation of lymph fluid. It is caused by disruption of the normal lymph drainage system and in cancer patients this is often as a direct result of their condition or treatments, such as surgical removal or radiotherapy scarring of some lymph vessels. Although initially similar in appearance to the commonly suffered “puffy” feet, ankles and hands, Lymphoedema of this kind is slightly different. If left untreated, Lymphoedema can become debilitating, affecting joint movement and mobility.

Once a patient develops Lymphoedema they will always have a tendency to some swelling, and the aim of any treatment is to reduce that swelling as much as possible and maintain that reduction. This type of treatment and management is achieved by combination of four elements:-

Compression – in the form of bandaging or hosiery to support the limb and encourage fluid movement.
Exercise – to encourage drainage of fluid and maintain limb function.
Massage – to assist drainage.
Skin care – to reduce infection risk.

EMH has a nurse-led Lymphoedema Service, which can provide these types of treatment and management for Hospice patients, in order to maintain their independence and quality of life. The service is mainly conducted on an outpatient basis by a Lymphoedema nurse practitioner with specialist knowledge and training.

Anne-Marie Phillips presently holds these clinics one day a week and on the ward. Referral is for Hospice patients only.
