Complementary Therapy Service
Complementary Therapies are an important part of the holistic care we provide at EMH. They contribute to the physical, emotional and spiritual well-being of the people who receive them. Therapies are available to all in-patients, day care patients and out-patients as appropriate for their needs.
This service is free of charge.
We have a team of fully qualified professional therapists who are volunteers. They have been selected for their caring, sensitive approach. All treatments are gentle and tailored to each individual.
We have a dedicated quiet and comfortable Complementary therapy room for Day Care and Out-patients, or therapies can be given to patients in their rooms on the ward. Complementary Therapy is offered Monday –Friday, subject to the availability of therapists.
The benefits of Complementary Therapies include:
- Enhanced relaxation
- Reduced tension and anxiety
- Increased sense of well-being
- Relief of insomnia
- Reduced muscular tension
- Assistance in relieving pain
- Reduced feelings of nausea
Aromatherapy
Is the use of essential oils from plants. They each have unique characteristics and are used for their therapeutic properties. The essential oils are mixed according to each person’s needs and are blended with carrier oil, which is then massaged to appropriate parts of the body.
Massage
A light therapeutic massage is given with rhythmical touch and movements. The therapist will discuss and agree which part of your body to massage according to your needs.
Reflexology
This therapy is based on the principle that there are reflex areas in the feet and hands which correspond to all of the body’s organs and systems. Systematic application of gentle pressure to these reflex points promotes the flow of energy and hence homeostasis (balance).
Spiritual Therapy
This is channelling of energies through the therapist to the patient. The energy is from the universe and does not require any particular faith. It may involve light touch or no touch at all.
Visualisation and Relaxation
Patients are taught imaginative techniques to use the power of their minds to relax and focus on pleasant and positive images to relieve stress.
