Register now for Walk the Wight 2008
Sunday 18th May
Last year almost 5000 walkers raised over £217,000 towards caring for patients at the Hospice, walking through rain, mud and wind. It was a magnificent contribution from everyone. Thank you.
This year we hope it will be sunny and dry!
The Walk goes 26.5 miles across the beautiful hills of the Isle of Wight. You can chose to do the whole Walk, starting at Bembridge, and finishing at the Needles Park, Alum Bay. Alternatively you can chose to do the first or second half, finishing or starting at Carisbroke.
Visit the Walk the Wight website for full details and to register online.
New this year - the Flat Walk the Wight - if you don't fancy walking the hills.
On the same day we are starting an 8 mile Flat Walk the Wight mainly along the old railway line from Sandown High School to Thompson's Shide Trees just outside Newport. The tracks are mainly graveled so suitable for baby buggies or rugged wheelchairs. There are also access points along the way if you want to walk a shorter distance.
All the details are on the Walk the Wight website. Pre-registration is mandatory, but free. You can register online.
FREE bus travel on any Southern Vectis bus and reduced Red Funnel fares on the day to Walkers showing their Walker's number.
- In addition to the special Walk the Wight buses, Southern Vectis are kindly offering free travel on any scheduled bus service on the day to help Walk the Wighters get to and from the Walks.
- Red Funnel are also offering reduced fares on Redjet passenger ferries to Walkers.
- However, you need to show your Walker's number, so make sure you register. Full details on their websites

Walk the Wight Poem written by David Cham.
Memoirs of a Marathon
May’s morning mist ascends o’er sceptred isle
Greenkilted by the onrushing tide of Spring
Warmed by golden sunlight from Heaven’s lofty aisle
The day awaits – what will its long hours bring?
For this day some ten thousand feet will march
O’er gorse-crested downland and deep-wooded dell
Past frowning Carisbrooke’s walls with ramparts harsh
Through pine scented forestry where birdsong weaves
its spell.
Until at western Wight the long ascent
Past rearing whitewashed cliffs to granite cross
Where poet laureate his many hours spent
Gazing on channel vista as wild waves toss.
But onward, ever onward snakes the trail
‘Til finally the Needles come in sight
Then downward swoops the path – no more travail
The coloured sands at Alum ends our plight.
‘Tis journey’s end – the pain of blistered feet reward
The efforts of the multitude, who nonetheless
Are happy that they took to grassy sward
And so help wretched others under great duress.
